About Manuel Perez Park in Oklahoma City
Manuel Perez Park is a 27-acre public space located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The park was renamed in October 2016 by the City of Oklahoma City Council to honor Manuel Perez Jr., an Oklahoma City native and World War II hero.
Manuel Perez Jr. was born in the Riverside neighborhood of Oklahoma City in 1923. At the age of 19, he was drafted to serve in the Army during World War II, where he displayed great heroism in the Battle of Luzon, Philippines. Perez was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the country's highest award, for single-handedly defeating an enemy unit while protecting his fellow soldiers in February 1945.
The park serves as a monument to all of Oklahoma's Medal of Honor recipients. It features a memorial that includes a water feature and the relocated Manuel Perez memorial plaque. The park also honors other veterans from the state of Oklahoma.
In 2020, improvements were made to the park, including the addition of approximately 5,000 square feet of plaza-style terrain to the existing Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park within the park grounds. This new terrain added features such as a curved, 3-level ledge complex, a bank to rail, a hand rail, a Jersey barrier, and a quarter pipe transition.
The park is open daily from dawn to 11:00 p.m., though it may close for inclement weather or after rain or snow.
