About Douglas Park in Oklahoma City
Douglas Park is a municipal park located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Originally part of a school land section that funded public schools by leasing land to private individuals, the park was established in 1911 when the state Land Office converted the area into an addition to Oklahoma City. The park and surrounding Douglas Place addition were named after Grace Douglas, who had previously held the lease on the land.
Situated between NW 45th and 47th streets, and between N. Walker and Lee, Douglas Park spans approximately 8.5 acres. The park's history is intertwined with that of Grace Douglas, a notable figure who operated a farm on the school lease and worked as a freelance draftsman during a time when women were discouraged from pursuing careers.
The park's landscape has evolved over time. Once characterized by sharp features and a natural draw that drained water into the Deep Fork River about half a mile north, the area has since been smoothed by landscaping efforts. The current playground area was once the top of a small bluff, with the north and south sides forming a banked slope that created the draw.
Douglas Park serves as a recreational space for the surrounding community, offering various amenities for visitors to enjoy. It provides a green oasis within the urban environment of Oklahoma City, contributing to the city's network of public parks and open spaces.
