About Mesta Park in Oklahoma City

Perle Mesta Park is a charming community park located in the heart of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The park is situated within the historic Mesta Park neighborhood, which was originally known as University Addition. The land for the park was acquired by the City of Oklahoma City in July 1974 using proceeds from a 1968 General Obligation Bond Issue. It was officially designated as Perle Mesta Park by the City Council in May 1975.

The park is named after Perle Mesta, a famous 20th-century Oklahoma City socialite and women's rights advocate. Mesta was known as "the Hostess with the Mostes'" due to her legendary parties in Washington, D.C. during the Truman presidency. Her brother, O.W. Skirvin, donated $5,000 for the establishment of the park and "Perle Mesta Plaza."

Spanning more than 2 acres, Perle Mesta Park serves as a hub for neighborhood activities and events. The park features a playground, which was improved with funding from a 1995 General Obligation bond issue. In 2001, a gazebo was constructed using funds from the City's Early Efforts Neighborhood Grant Program, the Parks Department, and the Mesta Park Neighborhood Association.

Over the years, the Mesta Park Neighborhood Association and friends of Perle Mesta Park have invested nearly $150,000 in park improvements. These enhancements include the planting of trees, the development of crepe myrtle beds, and the installation of a new entrance feature on the southwest corner of the park. The park also underwent safety improvements in 2009, including the transformation of the southeast entrance and the installation of new lighting.

Perle Mesta Park plays a significant role in community events, hosting annual gatherings such as Mesta Festa and ice cream socials. The park stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and serves as a beloved green space for residents and visitors alike.
