About McKinley Park in Oklahoma City

McKinley Park, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a 9.4-acre urban oasis that offers a tranquil and inviting ambiance for visitors. The park has a rich history, having been transformed from an abandoned brick pit into a vibrant community space. Originally owned by the Oklahoma Brick Company, the site was abandoned in 1913, leaving behind a 60-foot deep pit that had become hazardous for local children.

Recognizing the potential danger, residents in the neighborhood came together to form the Oklahoma Brick Pit Improvement Association. They raised funds to aid the city in reclaiming the land for public use. The process of acquiring the land and filling the pit took several years, with work on the park beginning in earnest in 1928.

During the Great Depression, the park's development continued with the help of laborers from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). They constructed distinctive stone castle clubhouses – one for boys and one for girls – which became iconic features of the park. Local tradesmen donated their time to install lights and other amenities, while neighborhood residents transplanted trees from their own yards to enhance the park's greenery.

McKinley Park finally opened to the public in 1933 and was quickly proclaimed the finest gem in the city's park system. Today, it serves as a testament to community effort and perseverance.

The park offers a variety of recreational facilities and natural spaces for visitors to enjoy. It features well-maintained walking paths, providing an ideal setting for those seeking an active and rejuvenating outdoor experience. The lush greenery and serene atmosphere make it a popular destination for both walkers and runners.

McKinley Park is designed to cater to visitors of all ages, with amenities that encourage physical activity and community engagement. Its location near the Plaza District adds to its accessibility and appeal for local residents and visitors alike.
