About Tugman Park in Eugene

Tugman Park is a 20.6-acre neighborhood park located in Eugene, Oregon. Situated on the west side of Hilyard Street from 36th to 38th Avenue, it is one of Eugene's largest neighborhood parks. The park was established in 1939 with the purchase of its first parcel of land.

Originally known as South Amazon Park, it was later renamed in honor of William M. Tugman, who served as the editor of the Register Guard newspaper from 1927 to 1954. Tugman was also instrumental in advocating for Oregon's state parks, becoming the first chairman of the State Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee in 1957.

The park features a mix of open spaces, wooded areas, and recreational facilities. In 2019, the playground received a major renovation funded by the 2018 Parks and Recreation Bond and Levy. This update included new play structures, climbing features, and a sand play area, enhancing the park's appeal for families and children.

The southern portion of Tugman Park has an interesting history, as it was once the site of a municipal burning dump. This dump was in use from around 1925 to 1951, and underwent environmental remediation in the mid-1990s under the direction of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

In 2002, the park was expanded with the addition of a high-quality natural area in its northwest corner, formerly known as "Fawn Lily Rise." This addition contributes to the park's ecological diversity and provides opportunities for nature observation.

Tugman Park serves as a valuable community resource, offering a variety of recreational opportunities and green spaces for Eugene residents. Its mix of amenities and natural areas makes it a popular destination for both active recreation and passive enjoyment of nature.
