About Columbia View Park in Portland
Columbia View Park is a 35.37-acre public park located in north Portland, Oregon, United States. Situated at the intersection of North Lombard Street and Woolsey Avenue, the park has been a fixture of the community since its establishment in 1891.
The park features a diverse landscape with mature Douglas-firs and lindens, providing ample shade and natural beauty. A large open meadow area serves as a central gathering space, surrounded by an oval path system that weaves in and out of the perimeter trees and plantings. This design, inspired by a 1914 plan crafted by Emanuel T. Mische, creates an inviting environment for visitors to enjoy various activities.
Columbia View Park is home to several historic structures, including a building designed by Ellis Lawrence that houses restrooms and provides an open picnic pavilion. This structure, with its Tudor-style architecture featuring half-timbering and wide barge boards, is one of many similar buildings found in early Portland parks.
The park is open from 5 AM to midnight daily, making it accessible for early morning joggers and evening strollers alike. Its location on the outskirts of a sprawling suburb gives it a unique position at the edge of the urban environment, bordering on more natural wooded areas.
Throughout the summer months, Columbia View Park becomes a focal point for community gatherings. From June through September, the park hosts "13 Nights on the River," a popular outdoor concert series that draws residents to enjoy music and picnics on the lawn while taking in views of the Columbia River.
