About Gabriel Park in Portland
Gabriel Park is a 90.65-acre public park located in southwest Portland, Oregon, United States. Situated between the Maplewood, Multnomah, and Hayhurst neighborhoods, the park's main entrance is at SW 45th Avenue and Vermont Street. The park was established in October 1950 when the Parks Bureau purchased an 87-acre tract of land for $120,000. This land, which features two small creeks and wooded areas, was previously owned by Swiss immigrant Ulrich Gabriel, who operated the Pine Creek Dairy on the property.
The park offers a diverse range of recreational facilities and natural areas. It includes approximately 30 acres of natural area, featuring a pollinator meadow, a nature patch, and a free-flowing section of Vermont Creek. The park's extensive trail system includes both paved and unpaved paths, providing opportunities for walking, running, and nature exploration. In 2020, the park underwent a trail and signage project to formalize and improve the soft-surface nature trails within the natural area.
Gabriel Park is home to various sports facilities, including baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and sand volleyball courts. In 2008, a 10,000-square-foot skatepark was added, featuring an 8,000-square-foot snake run and unique perimeter features. The park also includes two fenced, 1.75-acre dog off-leash areas, which are particularly popular among local pet owners.
In recent years, Gabriel Park has undergone several improvements to enhance accessibility and inclusivity. In 2022, a new inclusive playground was opened, designed to provide a rich play experience for children of all abilities. The playground features accessible routes to all equipment, inclusive play elements, and sensory engagement opportunities.
The Southwest Community Center, located at the northwest corner of the park, offers additional amenities such as an indoor swimming pool, fitness room, gymnasium, and various community spaces. The park also includes a community garden and orchard, providing opportunities for local residents to engage in urban agriculture.
Gabriel Park serves as an important green space in southwest Portland, offering a balance of recreational facilities and natural areas. It provides diverse opportunities for community engagement, physical activity, and connection with nature, making it a valuable resource for local residents and visitors alike.
