About The Rail Park in Philadelphia
The Rail Park is an urban linear park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, created from a former elevated rail line. The park's first phase, opened in June 2018, spans a quarter-mile section of the former Reading Viaduct in the Callowhill neighborhood. This initial segment runs from Noble Street to Callowhill Street, offering pedestrians an elevated green space with views of the city skyline.
The park features a blend of industrial heritage and modern landscaping. It incorporates elements of the old railroad infrastructure, including steel beams and stone walls, while introducing new plantings, walkways, and seating areas. The design aims to preserve the site's history while creating a usable public space for the community.
When completed, the full vision for the Rail Park is to extend for three miles, connecting various Philadelphia neighborhoods from Fairmount Park to Northern Liberties. The park is divided into three distinct sections: the elevated Viaduct, the below-grade Cut, and the subterranean Tunnel. Each section presents unique characteristics and challenges for development.
The Rail Park is managed through a partnership between the Center City District, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and the Friends of the Rail Park. This collaboration ensures ongoing maintenance, programming, and future development of the park.
