About Julian Abele Park in Philadelphia
Julian Abele Park is a small urban green space located in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park occupies less than one acre at the intersection of 22nd Street and Carpenter Street.
Named after Julian Abele, a prominent African American architect who designed many notable buildings in Philadelphia, the park was established in 2008. It was the first new public park created in Philadelphia in over a decade at the time.
The park features an open lawn area surrounded by trees and benches. A decorative fence and gate designed by local artist Christopher Wheeler encloses the space, with the gate's design inspired by Julian Abele's work on the Duke University Chapel.
As part of Philadelphia's Green City, Clean Waters initiative, the park incorporates stormwater management features. Tree trenches along the sidewalks help capture and filter rainwater runoff.
The Friends of Julian Abele Park, a community group, helps maintain the park and organizes events there throughout the year. These events have included concerts, movie nights, and a seasonal farmers market.
