About Mario Lanza Park in Philadelphia
Mario Lanza Park is a small "pocket park" located in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park occupies a space between Catherine and Queen Streets, just west of 2nd Street.
Historically, this area was once the site of Trinity Episcopal Church and its burial ground in the early 19th century. By the early 1900s, the church had been demolished and the space became known as Queen Park. In 1967, it was renamed Mario Lanza Park in honor of the famous Philadelphia-born tenor.
The park underwent revitalization efforts in the late 1980s to improve its appearance and accessibility. Today, it serves as a central gathering place for the community, offering green space and recreational amenities in the urban neighborhood. The park features benches, lawns, gardens, and a dedicated dog run area.
Mario Lanza Park is maintained through the efforts of local volunteers and the Friends of Mario Lanza Park group, in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. The park hosts community events throughout the year, including movie nights and music performances in warmer months.
