About Liberty Lands Park in Philadelphia
Liberty Lands is a 2-acre multi-use community greenspace located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park was created through grassroots efforts to transform an industrial brownfield into a vital community space. Originally the site of the Burk Brothers Tannery, the land was donated to the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association (NLNA) in 1996 after environmental cleanup efforts.
The park features a large central open area bordered by alleys of shade trees, with a council circle of flowering crabapples and small public gardens throughout. It serves as a hub for community activities and provides much-needed green space in an urban setting. Liberty Lands is privately owned and maintained by community volunteers, making it a unique example of neighborhood-driven urban renewal.
Since its establishment, Liberty Lands has become an integral part of Northern Liberties' social fabric. The park hosts various community events, including outdoor movie screenings, festivals, and gatherings. It has played a significant role in attracting new residents and developments to the area over the past decades, contributing to the neighborhood's revitalization.
Liberty Lands has been recognized for its community character and aesthetic appeal, having been named one of America's "Great Public Spaces" by Projects for Public Spaces, a nonprofit organization that works with communities to build sustainable public spaces across the United States and globally.
