About Firstside Park in Pittsburgh
Firstside Park is an urban green space located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Situated near one of the city's main entrances, it serves as one of the first parks visitors encounter when arriving in Pittsburgh. The park was designed to create connections within the urban landscape and provide a peaceful retreat from the surrounding city environment.
Spanning four acres, Firstside Park features walking paths that wind through a carefully landscaped terrain. The park's design incorporates mounded areas planted with a variety of vegetation, including ferns, flowering bulbs, and ornamental grasses. One of the park's most notable features is its collection of 101 native trees, specifically chosen for their blooming seasons, fragrances, and ability to provide visual interest throughout all four seasons of the year. Some of the tree species found in the park include red maples, lindens, zelkovas, and river birches.
The park also showcases several public art installations, adding a cultural dimension to the space. Among these are larger-than-life bronze sculptures depicting playful animals, including a pair of monkeys, frogs, and a seated rabbit. These whimsical artworks contribute to the park's unique character and provide points of interest for visitors.
Firstside Park was developed as part of a broader urban renewal initiative, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for downtown residents and workers while also creating an inviting space for tourists. Its location near the PNC Firstside Complex and other downtown buildings makes it a convenient spot for office workers to take breaks or enjoy lunch outdoors.
