August Wilson Park

August Wilson Park, located in Pittsburgh's historic Hill District, is a vibrant neighborhood asset that underwent significant restoration in recent years. Formerly known as Cliffside Park, it was renamed in honor of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson in 2016.

The park spans four acres and offers sweeping views of Pittsburgh's north side, the Allegheny River, and the Strip District. Its landscape is characterized by mature oak trees and a rolling, fully accessible terrain. The park's design is based on the Greenprint for the Hill District, a plan that aims to reconnect residents with their unique landscape and connect the Hill District to the broader city.

A key feature of August Wilson Park is its focus on inclusivity and community involvement. The restoration project, spearheaded by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, incorporated input from local residents who had witnessed the park's decline over the years. The redesign addressed issues such as poor condition of existing amenities, overgrown views, and drainage problems.

The park showcases elements of modern urban design while preserving its historical significance. It includes an installation of vintage photographs by Pittsburgh native Charles "Teenie" Harris, as well as quotations from August Wilson, celebrating the area's rich cultural heritage.

August Wilson Park serves as a community gathering space, offering opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and cultural engagement. Its transformation represents a successful blend of urban planning, community participation, and historical preservation.
