About Kennard Park in Pittsburgh
Kennard Playground is a small neighborhood park located in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Originally constructed in 1918 as Soho Playground, it was later renamed in honor of Beulah Elfreth Kennard. The park serves as an important recreational space for the local community.
The playground features a multi-use field that accommodates various sports including football, baseball, and soccer. This field, known as Kennard Field, is home to youth sports programs such as the Hill District Rebels youth football team. However, the field has been noted to have drainage issues, often becoming muddy after rain.
Kennard Playground also includes basketball courts and a tennis court, though these facilities have been reported to be in need of maintenance. The basketball courts have been described as having numerous patches to cover holes, while the tennis court has open cracks.
The park contains basic playground equipment for children, providing a space for younger visitors to play. Additionally, there is a spray feature, offering relief during hot summer days.
A building on the premises was intended to serve as a bathroom facility for park users. However, due to its poor condition, it has been repurposed for storage, with portable toilets provided instead for visitors' use.
In recent years, there have been plans for significant renovations to Kennard Playground. These plans aim to address the maintenance issues and improve the overall quality of the park's facilities for the community.
