About Schenley Plaza in Pittsburgh
Schenley Plaza is a 4.5-acre public park located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Serving as the grand entrance to Schenley Park, it sits adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh campus and is surrounded by notable landmarks such as the Cathedral of Learning, Carnegie Library, and Carnegie Museums.
Originally designed as a formal entrance to Schenley Park in the early 20th century, the plaza was converted into a parking lot in 1949. However, in the 1990s, a revitalization effort began, culminating in the plaza's renovation and reopening in 2006. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh, oversaw this transformation.
The centerpiece of Schenley Plaza is a one-acre "Emerald Lawn," which provides a versatile space for relaxation and events. The plaza features ornamental gardens with plants native to Western Pennsylvania, creating a vibrant and changing landscape throughout the seasons. A Victorian-style carousel adds a touch of whimsy and historical charm to the space.
Schenley Plaza is designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It includes a tented area for shade, movable outdoor seating, and free wireless internet access, making it a popular spot for students, professionals, and families alike. The plaza also houses several food kiosks and a full-service restaurant, The Porch, offering visitors diverse dining options.
The plaza serves as a community gathering space, hosting various events and activities throughout the year. It has become a vital part of Oakland's urban fabric, providing a green oasis amidst the bustling neighborhood and connecting the surrounding educational and cultural institutions.
