About Riverview Park in Pittsburgh
Riverview Park is a 259-acre urban green space located on Pittsburgh's North Side. Created in 1894, the park predates the City of Allegheny's annexation to Pittsburgh in 1907. Originally farmland, Riverview Park is now known for its dense woodlands and steep topography.
The park is nestled between Perrysville Avenue, Woods Run, and Marshall Avenue, featuring an extensive network of wooded trails that invite hikers, joggers, and occasional horseback riders. Its dramatic hillsides and natural beauty make it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
A prominent feature of Riverview Park is the Allegheny Observatory, a landmark building dedicated to astronomical research. The park is also home to the Chapel Shelter, a historic picnic shelter that was once a Presbyterian church. This structure was restored in 2008, adding to the park's historical significance.
Riverview Park offers various recreational facilities, including a swimming pool, playground, ball field, and picnic shelters. The park hosts summertime concerts and movies, providing entertainment for visitors. The popular two-mile Riverview Loop is a favorite among regular park-goers.
Environmental features of the park include the Mairdale watershed, adding to its ecological importance. Plans for the park's future development include the restoration of the historic Watson's Cabin and continued restoration of the Snyder's Point natural area.
