Dexter Training Ground

Dexter Training Ground is a historic 9-acre park located in the West End of Providence, Rhode Island. Donated to the city by philanthropist Ebenezer Knight Dexter in 1824, the park was originally intended for military training purposes. Over the years, it has evolved into a vital community space serving the dense West Broadway neighborhood.

The park features long walking paths lined with beautiful London Plane trees, providing ample shade for visitors. Its open fields have played a significant role in local history, serving as a mustering and encampment site during the Civil War and World War I. Notably, the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (Colored), the first African-American company from Rhode Island to serve in the Civil War, was raised in Providence and bivouacked here.

Today, Dexter Training Ground is one of the most heavily-used parks in Providence, offering a variety of recreational opportunities for residents. The park's central location makes it easily accessible, and its diverse amenities cater to different age groups and interests. A bronze statue of Ebenezer Dexter, cast by Gorham Manufacturing in 1893, stands watch over the park, serving as a reminder of its benefactor.

Throughout the year, the park hosts various community events. From June through October, a weekly farmers market takes place on Thursday evenings, adding to the park's role as a community hub.
