About Donigian Memorial Park in Providence
Donigian Park is a public green space located in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Situated along the Woonasquatucket River, this park serves as an important recreational area for local residents and visitors alike.
The park has undergone significant revitalization efforts in recent years. Once plagued by pollution and neglect, Donigian Park has been transformed into a clean, welcoming space through community-driven cleanup initiatives. In 2009, volunteers removed 150 shopping carts and two tons of automobile tires from the river during a single cleanup event.
Donigian Park features open green spaces, walking paths, and access to the Woonasquatucket River. It serves as a gateway to the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, a network of parks and bike paths along the river. The park provides opportunities for various recreational activities and serves as a natural oasis within the urban environment of Providence.
Historically, Donigian Park, along with nearby Merino Park, was a popular destination for Providence residents in the 1880s, who would visit to enjoy swimming, picnicking, and the natural surroundings. Today, while swimming is no longer advised due to past industrial pollution, the park continues to be a valued community asset for outdoor enjoyment and river appreciation.
