About Merino Park in Providence

Merino Park is an 18.6-acre public park located in the Hartford neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. Situated along the banks of the Woonasquatucket River, the park lies between Hartford Avenue and Route 6.

The site has a rich history, having previously served as a sheep farm, skating pond, landfill, and road salt storage area. In the 1990s, the park was condemned as a brownfield due to contamination. However, through cleanup efforts in the early 2000s, it was revitalized as a public recreational space.

Merino Park now stands as an important green space in this urban area, offering recreational opportunities for local residents. The park features several amenities for visitors, including sports facilities and areas for relaxation. Its location along the Woonasquatucket River Greenway provides connectivity to the broader urban trail system.

The park has undergone significant improvements over the years. In 2021, the Providence Parks Department oversaw a project that included resurfacing the basketball court and installing new equipment. These efforts have helped transform Merino Park into a more welcoming and functional community space.
