Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is a public green space located in North Charleston, South Carolina, along the banks of the Cooper River. The park sits on land that was formerly part of the Charleston Naval Base, which closed in 1996. After the base's closure, the City of North Charleston transformed the area into a recreational space for residents and visitors.

The park features expansive lawns bordered by grand oak trees draped with Spanish moss, offering peaceful river vistas. A centerpiece of the park is the contemporary performance pavilion, which hosts various concerts and events throughout the year. The park's location adjacent to the historic homes once occupied by Naval officers adds to its scenic appeal.

Riverfront Park is home to the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, honoring the military personnel and civilians who served at the base during its 95 years of operation. This memorial includes an open pavilion that shares the history of the base, as well as statues known as "The Lone Sailor" and "The Homecoming."

The park also serves as the venue for North Charleston's Annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition, displaying large-scale contemporary sculptures that change yearly. Visitors can enjoy walking paths, including a boardwalk along the river, providing opportunities for exercise and nature appreciation.

For families, the park offers amenities such as a children's playground and an interactive water fountain. Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines from the Admiral's pier or a wooden dock. The park's design incorporates sustainable practices, balancing recreational use with environmental considerations.
