About Burnett Park in Fort Worth
Burk Burnett Park is a three-acre urban green space located in the heart of downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The park was established in 1917 when Captain Samuel Burk Burnett donated the land to the city to honor his children. It has since become an important part of Fort Worth's landscape and history.
The park is designed around a geometric grid of 24 squares, creating a unique layout that blends modern aesthetics with natural elements. In 2002, the park's north end near West 7th Street became home to a notable piece of public art: Jonathan Borofsky's "Man With Briefcase." This 50-foot tall polished aluminum sculpture features a cut-out silhouette of a man in a suit and fedora carrying a briefcase, adding a distinctive visual element to the park.
Burk Burnett Park has a long-standing tradition associated with the holiday season. In 1937, the park's first community Christmas tree was installed, initiating an annual celebration of the Christmas tree lighting that continues to this day. This event has become a cherished part of Fort Worth's holiday festivities.
The park serves as a tranquil oasis amid the bustling urban environment, offering visitors a place to relax, enjoy nature, and engage in various recreational activities. It is managed by Downtown Fort Worth, Inc., ensuring its maintenance and continued role as a vital public space in the city.
