About Rick Oden Park in Garland
Rick Oden Park is a nearly 37-acre linear park located in Garland, Texas, just east of South Garland Road off Miller Road. The park is named after Richard "Rick" Oden, a young Little League player who tragically died in 1956 after being struck by a baseball during a game. It was the first on-field death in U.S. Little League history, and the park was renamed in his honor shortly after the incident.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It is home to the Jack Coleman Tennis Center, which attracts tennis enthusiasts from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The center features multiple tennis courts for both casual play and more serious training.
In addition to tennis, Rick Oden Park includes baseball fields, reflecting its historical connection to the sport. The park also features a picnic area and a playground, making it suitable for family outings and community gatherings.
A significant addition to the park is the Jon Comer Skatepark, which opened in October 2022. This skatepark is notable for being the second largest in Texas, covering an impressive 48,500 square feet of skating area. It is designed to accommodate skaters of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders.
The park has undergone recent improvements as part of Garland's 2019 Bond Program. These upgrades include the installation of a new regional playground, pedestrian bridge, shade structures, benches, drinking fountains, restrooms, and trail improvements. The sports fields have also been renovated, and general site infrastructure has been enhanced.
