About Phil Hardberger Park in San Antonio
Phil Hardberger Park is a 311-acre natural area park located in San Antonio, Texas. The park opened in May 2010 and is situated on either side of Wurzbach Parkway, between N.W. Military Highway and Blanco Road. It was developed on the site of a former dairy farm, with the original 19th-century farmhouse still standing on the park's east side.
The park is named after Phil Hardberger, a former mayor of San Antonio who championed the park's development. It is designed to preserve the natural environment while providing recreational opportunities for visitors. The park features a diverse ecosystem, including woodland, savanna, and grassland habitats that support various wildlife species.
One of the park's most notable features is the Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge, completed in late 2020. This innovative structure spans Wurzbach Parkway, connecting both sides of the park and serving as a wildlife crossing. The land bridge is accompanied by the Skywalk, an elevated walkway that offers visitors a unique perspective of the park's tree canopy.
Phil Hardberger Park is classified as a natural area, and recreational usage is limited to help preserve the environment. Visitors are encouraged to stay on designated trails to minimize their impact on wildlife and plants. The park also includes an Urban Ecology Center, which opened in September 2013, providing educational programs and exhibits about the park's ecosystem and conservation efforts.
