About Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton

Sandy Bottom Nature Park is a 456-acre environmental education and wildlife management facility located in Hampton, Virginia. The park was established in the early 1990s on land that was previously used for borrow pits and garbage dumps, making it a successful example of natural resource reclamation.

The park features two main bodies of water: Sandy Bottom Lake, a 12-acre fishing pond, and Crystal Lake, which is used for recreational activities. Sandy Bottom Lake was formed from a borrow pit originally excavated during the construction of Interstate 64. It now supports populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and other fish species.

Sandy Bottom Nature Park offers approximately 12 miles of trails that wind through various habitats including forests, wooded and marshy wetlands, and lake edges. These trails provide opportunities for hiking, biking, and wildlife observation. The park's diverse ecosystems support a variety of plant and animal species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching and nature study.

At the heart of the park is a 10,000-square-foot nature center that overlooks Sandy Bottom Lake. The center houses educational exhibits, live animals, and offers various programs and guided walks. Outside the nature center, visitors can find gardens that are excellent for observing butterflies and dragonflies.

The park provides several recreational amenities, including boat rentals for exploring the lakes, fishing opportunities, picnic areas, and camping facilities. Primitive campsites and tent cabins are available for overnight stays, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Sandy Bottom Nature Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, with extended hours for fishing from the pier. The nature center has its own operating hours, which vary seasonally. As a public facility, the park aims to provide environmental education and outdoor recreation opportunities while preserving the natural habitats within its boundaries.
