Dock Street Park

Dock Street Park is a new addition to the James River Park System in Richmond, Virginia. Located along the James River, the park spans 4.5 acres and provides public access to the waterfront. The park's site was previously an undeveloped area that sat unused for over a decade, surrounded by barbed wire fencing.

The park's creation is part of a larger effort to expand public green spaces in Richmond's East End and improve access to the James River. It was developed through a partnership between the Capital Region Land Conservancy, the James River Association, and the City of Richmond. The land acquisition for the park was completed in 2021, with the park opening to the public in June 2024.

Dock Street Park offers visitors direct access to the James River and provides a connection to the Virginia Capital Trail. The park's location is historically significant, as it sits near the area that inspired William Byrd II to name the city of Richmond in 1737, due to its resemblance to the view of the Thames River from Richmond, England.

The park is designed to provide recreational opportunities while also preserving the natural environment along the river. It features walking trails that wind through native vegetation, allowing visitors to experience the local flora. The park also includes outdoor seating areas where people can relax and enjoy views of the James River.
