About Pier 62 in Seattle
Pier 62 is a public park located on Seattle's central waterfront. Opened in 2020 after extensive renovation, this one-acre flexible space serves as a preview and initial segment of the larger Waterfront Park project. The pier extends out over Elliott Bay, offering visitors panoramic views of the water, the Olympic Mountains, and the Seattle skyline.
Originally constructed in the 1900s for maritime commerce, Pier 62 has been transformed into a modern urban park. The renovation replaced old wooden pilings with steel ones and added a new concrete deck, creating a safer and more sustainable structure. The pier now provides nearly 40,000 square feet of public space.
Designed to be a versatile community gathering place, Pier 62 hosts a variety of activities and events throughout the year. These range from fitness classes and cultural programs to concerts and art installations. The open layout allows for flexible use of the space, accommodating both large events and casual daily visitors.
A key feature of Pier 62 is its floating dock, which provides direct access to the water and includes an art installation by Stephen Vitiello. The dock's design incorporates elements that respond to tidal movements, creating an ever-changing soundscape.
Environmental considerations were integral to the pier's redesign. New grating along the seawall increases light penetration to improve the nearshore salmon habitat below. The pier also features energy-efficient LED lighting embedded in its railings.
Pier 62 is open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM and is accessible to the public free of charge. It serves as an important public space in Seattle, offering residents and visitors alike a place to connect with the city's maritime heritage and natural beauty.
