About Powell Barnett Park in Seattle
Powell Barnett Park is a 4.4-acre urban green space located in Seattle's Central District, between East Alder and East Jefferson streets. Named in 1969 after civil rights activist and community leader Powell Barnett, the park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages.
The park features a children's play area with complex climbing structures, designed to provide engaging activities for younger visitors. During summer months, a wading pool is available, offering relief from warmer temperatures. For sports enthusiasts, the park includes basketball hoops and a broad field suitable for activities like frisbee.
Throughout the park, visitors can find benches and picnic tables, providing areas for relaxation and gatherings. The park's design incorporates ADA accessible restrooms housed in a distinctive castle-shaped building adjacent to the play area, ensuring facilities are available to all park users.
Originally chosen as a potential site for a junior high school, the land was initially developed as a running track and athletic field for nearby Garfield High School. In 1962, after Garfield acquired its own playfield, the site was repurposed. The Department of Parks purchased the land in 1966, and community-driven improvements were made the following year through the Central Area Motivation Program.
Powell Barnett Park underwent a significant renovation in 2006, thanks to a collaborative effort between community volunteers and Starbucks. This makeover included the installation of new play equipment, path renovations, and updates to various park facilities, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
