About Kobe Terrace Park in Seattle
Kobe Terrace is a 1-acre public park located in the International District neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Named after Seattle's sister city Kobe, Japan, this terraced hillside park offers a unique urban green space with a blend of Japanese-inspired elements and community gardens.
The park is situated on the northeast edge of the International District, bordered by S. Washington Street to the north, S. Main Street to the south, and Interstate 5 to the east. Its terraced design takes advantage of the natural slope, providing visitors with winding pathways and various levels to explore.
One of the park's notable features is the collection of Mt. Fuji cherry trees that adorn the landscape. These trees, along with a four-ton, 200-year-old Yukimidoro stone lantern placed on the hilltop, were gifts from the people of Kobe, Japan. The cherry trees bloom beautifully in spring, creating a picturesque scene that draws many visitors.
The lower portion of Kobe Terrace incorporates the Danny Woo International District Community Garden. This garden is divided into small plots where community residents cultivate vegetables, herbs, and flowers. It serves as both a green space and a valuable resource for local gardeners.
Kobe Terrace offers pleasant sitting areas and walking paths between S. Washington and S. Main Streets. Visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding city, including glimpses of Mount Rainier to the south on clear days. The park's elevation also provides an interesting perspective of the nearby freeway traffic.
While the park provides a peaceful retreat, it's worth noting that its proximity to the freeway means that traffic noise is often present. Nevertheless, Kobe Terrace remains a valued green space in the urban environment, offering a mix of cultural significance, community engagement, and natural beauty.
