About Donnie Chin International Children’s Park in Seattle
Donnie Chin International Children's Park is a 0.2-acre public park located in the Chinatown-International District neighborhood of downtown Seattle, Washington. Originally opened in 1981 and renovated in 2012, the park is situated at the northeast corner of the intersection of South Lane Street and 7th Avenue South.
The park features an open lawn area, picnic facilities, gathering spaces, and landscaping. A key attraction is the play area, which offers varied equipment including a set of drums. The centerpiece of the park is an iconic bronze dragon sculpture created by artist Gerard Tsutakawa, which serves both as a visual element and play equipment for children.
During the 2012 renovation, local Seattle artist Stuart Nakamura was commissioned to create new art pieces for the park. With input from the community, including children from the Denise Louie Education Center and seniors from Legacy House, Nakamura designed three sculptures representing different cultural elements of the neighborhood: a spinning top, an I-Ching Coin, and a SepakTakraw Ball.
The park's design emphasizes making the space inviting for adults accompanying children. The renovation also aimed to improve visibility from the street and address potential safety issues that had previously led to underutilization of the space.
Donnie Chin International Children's Park, formerly known as the International District Children's Park or International Children's Park, is affectionately nicknamed "Dragon Park" due to its prominent dragon sculpture.
