About Rogers Playground in Seattle

Rogers Playground is a neighborhood park located in Seattle's Eastlake area. The park spans approximately 1.9 acres and offers a variety of recreational facilities for local residents and visitors. Situated between Eastlake Avenue and the TOPS at Seward school, Rogers Playground has been a part of the community since the late 19th century.

Originally owned by David Denny, the land was sold to the City of Seattle in 1896. The park began its existence as a playfield when the Denny-Fuhrman School (later renamed Seward School) was built in 1895. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition of 1909 spurred further development of the playground, as it lay on the trolley route from downtown to the exposition grounds.

In the 1960s, the construction of Interstate-5 bisected the area, creating challenges for the neighborhood and its playground. However, in 1998, a community group called Friends of Rogers Playground began a campaign to refurbish and revitalize the park.

Today, Rogers Playground features a mix of recreational amenities and green spaces. The park includes modern play equipment for children, sports facilities, and ample lawn areas for relaxation and informal activities. Its location near local schools makes it a popular spot for families and students.

As of 2023, the park is undergoing renovation, with the playfield closed until September for improvements. This ongoing maintenance and development reflect the community's continued investment in this long-standing neighborhood asset.
