Viretta Park

Viretta Park is a small 1.8-acre public park located in the Denny-Blaine neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Situated at the foot of E. John Street at 39th Avenue E., the park stretches down to Lake Washington Boulevard, offering visitors a grassy lookout with views of Lake Washington below steep slopes and brush.

Named after Viretta Chambers Denny, the daughter-in-law of Seattle pioneer Arthur Denny, the park was originally part of a private development platted in 1901. It later became a public park managed by Seattle Parks and Recreation.

Viretta Park gained notoriety in the 1990s due to its proximity to the former home of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana. The park's wooden benches have since become an unofficial memorial, often covered in graffiti messages left by fans paying tribute to the late musician. Visitors frequently gather at the park on the anniversaries of Cobain's death and birthday.

Despite its small size, the park has been the subject of various controversies over the years, including disputes with neighboring property owners and debates about potential memorials. Today, it remains a quiet spot for reflection, offering a brief respite and lake views for those traveling along Lake Washington Boulevard.
