About Balfour Park in Spokane Valley
Balfour Park is a public recreational area located in Spokane Valley, Washington. The park is currently undergoing a significant expansion project, which will increase its size from 2.8 acres to approximately 8.3 acres upon completion.
The park is situated at the intersection of E. Sprague Avenue and N. Herald Road, in what is often referred to as the "heart of Spokane Valley." This location was once home to the city's first retail mall in the 1970s and 1980s, making it a historically significant area for the community.
As part of the expansion project, Balfour Park is being developed in partnership between the City of Spokane Valley and the Spokane County Library District. This collaboration has led to the construction of a new Spokane Valley Public Library, which opened in June 2023 in the southwest corner of the park block.
The park's development is planned in multiple phases. Phase I improvements, completed in 2023, included the addition of a Sounders FC Soccer Mini-Pitch, a Veterans Memorial, an Events Plaza, new pathways with lighting, landscaping, restrooms, and expanded parking facilities.
Future phases of the park's development are set to include additional features such as a large playground, a splash pad, sports courts, a picnic shelter, and a covered stage with an amphitheater. These additions aim to create a comprehensive recreational space that caters to various community needs and interests.
Balfour Park serves as a central gathering place for the Spokane Valley community, offering open green spaces and recreational facilities for residents and visitors alike. Its ongoing development reflects the city's commitment to enhancing public spaces and providing diverse recreational opportunities for its citizens.
