About Grant Park in Spokane
Grant Park is a 12-acre public green space located in the Perry District of Spokane, Washington. Originally designed as a playfield, it was initially called the U.S. Grant Playground and covered 2.97 acres. The park's size increased significantly in the late 1960s when Interstate 90 was constructed, expanding to its current 12.62 acres.
The park has undergone several transformations since its inception. In 1974, a collaborative effort involving Washington State University, the 4-H Foundation, Standard Oil, and neighborhood residents led to the installation of new playground equipment. This community-driven initiative helped revitalize the park, which had been nicknamed "Grant Park Swamp" due to its previously neglected state.
Grant Park serves as a central gathering place for the surrounding neighborhood, offering a mix of recreational facilities and open spaces. Its location in the bustling Perry District makes it easily accessible to local residents and visitors alike. The park provides a serene environment within an urban setting, allowing people to enjoy outdoor activities and relaxation.
In recent years, Grant Park has seen the addition of a city garden, further enhancing its appeal and providing opportunities for community engagement in urban agriculture. This addition reflects the evolving needs and interests of the local community, as well as broader trends in urban park design and usage.
