About Liberty Park in Spokane
Liberty Park, located in Spokane, Washington, has a rich history dating back to 1897 when it was first deeded to the city. Originally designed by the renowned Olmsted brothers around 1907, it was once considered one of Spokane's premier parks, known for its natural beauty and eastward vistas from a terraced bluff.
The park underwent significant changes in the 1960s when the construction of Interstate 90 bisected the original 22-acre space. This development dramatically reshaped the park, leaving behind ruins of the former landscape, including basalt walls, staircases, and viewpoints from an original pergola. These remnants, sometimes referred to as "Spokane's Stonehenge," are visible to drivers passing through the I-90 interchange.
In response to the land lost to the freeway, Liberty Park was expanded eastward from its original location. The current iteration of the park features a mix of traditional park amenities and modern facilities. In 2021, a branch of the Spokane Public Library opened within the park, adding an educational dimension to the recreational space.
Recent renovations have further enhanced the park's offerings. In 2023, a new 4,000+ square foot playground was installed, featuring equipment selected by neighborhood children and a rubberized walking surface. The park also received a renovated restroom facility and a large picnic pavilion. Additionally, a disc golf course was added, expanding the recreational options available to visitors.
Liberty Park continues to serve as a vital community space in Spokane's East Central neighborhood, balancing its historical significance with modern amenities to meet the needs of current residents and visitors.
