About South Park in Tacoma
South Park in Tacoma, Washington is a community park located along South Tacoma Way. The park serves the south Tacoma area and features a variety of amenities for visitors to enjoy. Originally established in 1905, South Park was created from a section of the Spanaway Lake and Flume Line right-of-way purchased by the City of Tacoma Light and Water Company in 1893.
The park has evolved over the years to meet the needs of the community. In its early days, workers cleared trails and pathways, planted trees and shrubs, and laid out areas for flower beds and benches. A tennis court was added in 1910, along with sprinklers to maintain the lawn and over 2,100 plants placed in flower beds. By 1915, the park had become popular for local picnics and community gatherings.
South Park has continued to develop, with more recent additions including a new sprayground installed in 2015 to replace an old wading pool. The park also saw improvements to its restroom facilities that same year. Today, South Park offers a mix of recreational amenities and green spaces for visitors to enjoy.
One notable feature of South Park is its connection to the Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC). For over a decade, the park's former community center building served as a cultural center operated by APCC. APCC is in the process of constructing a new building at this location, which will further enhance the park's cultural offerings and community resources.
