About Thea's Park in Tacoma
Thea's Park is a 3.4-acre waterfront park located at the entrance to the Foss Waterway in downtown Tacoma, Washington. Established in 1996, the park offers visitors scenic views of Commencement Bay, the Port of Tacoma, and the surrounding landscape.
A prominent feature of Thea's Park is the 20 by 38 foot Harbor Flag, which welcomes people from all nations into the Port of Tacoma. The park also features an 8-foot memorial globe, installed in 2002 and dedicated on September 11, 2002. This steel globe shows the positions of Tacoma's 10 sister cities and 5 sister port cities, serving as a symbol of peace and unity in the global community.
Visitors to Thea's Park can enjoy watching ships, tugboats, and cranes in action at the busy port. The park's esplanade provides a pleasant area for strolling, and guests may occasionally spot floatplanes, harbor seals, sea lions, and kayakers in the waters nearby. A gangway from the park leads to the North Moorage float, where boaters can tie up for the day.
In addition to its maritime features, Thea's Park includes a Peace Pole installed in September 2021. This sculpted metal pole is encircled with words of peace in Lushootseed (the language of the Puyallup Tribe), English, and the languages of Tacoma's 13 sister cities.
The park serves as a launch point for kayaks and paddleboards, offering access to the calm waters of the 1.5-mile-long Foss Waterway, which is particularly suitable for beginners.
