About Fort Howard Park in Green Bay
Fort Howard Park is a 13-acre public park located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The park was named after the Fort Howard Paper Company, which originally owned the land with intentions of building warehouses. In 1959, three local women convinced the company to rent the property to the Village of Ashwaubenon for $1 per year to be used as a park.
The park's history is intertwined with local development, as tensions arose when the company annexed to Green Bay, leading the Village to move to condemn the land. In 1977, most of the property was given to the Village in exchange for an unused parcel. Small pieces of property have been acquired since then to make up the park's current size.
Fort Howard Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. It features multiple sports fields and courts, including soccer fields, a basketball court, and pickleball courts. For younger visitors, there is a playground area. The park also provides open spaces for general recreation and relaxation.
The park includes an open-air shelter, which can be used for picnics or small gatherings. Walking and biking trails wind through the park, offering opportunities for exercise and nature appreciation. During the summer months, Fort Howard Park participates in the Free Summer Lunch Program, providing meals for children in the community.
