About Kohl Park in Milwaukee

Kohl Park is a 266-acre public park located on the far northern edge of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The park provides an opportunity to improve habitat for wildlife and offers recreational opportunities for visitors.

The park contains a mix of landscapes, including mature evergreen plantations, hardwood forests, and open fields. Some areas of the park were once part of a historic farmstead, with remnants like an old silo still visible. The diverse habitats support a variety of plant and animal species, making it a popular spot for birding and nature observation.

Kohl Park features designated hiking trails that wind through the forested areas, allowing visitors to explore the natural surroundings. The trail system includes a National Recreation Trail, which offers opportunities for fitness activities and family outings in a natural setting.

In addition to its natural areas, Kohl Park includes some agricultural land. Approximately 50 acres of the park are leased to UW-Extension for community gardens, providing local residents with space to grow their own produce.

The park is undergoing habitat enhancement efforts as part of the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern (AOC) project. These improvements aim to create better conditions for native wildlife and connect Kohl Park to surrounding protected lands, forming a larger habitat corridor.
