About Valley Park in Milwaukee
Valley Park is a small urban green space located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, situated on the eastern bank of the Menomonee River. The park spans approximately 1.5 acres and serves as a local recreational area for the surrounding community, particularly the Pigsville neighborhood.
Originally part of the area's industrial landscape, Valley Park has undergone significant transformations over the years. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the park was included in a major flood management project by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). This $12 million initiative created a levee and floodwall system to protect 133 homes in the vicinity that had previously been affected by severe flooding in 1997 and 1998.
Today, Valley Park offers a blend of natural beauty and practical amenities. The park features walking and biking paths that allow visitors to enjoy the riverside scenery and connect to the broader network of trails in the Menomonee Valley. A playground provides recreational opportunities for children, while mature trees offer shade and contribute to the park's peaceful atmosphere.
The park's location near the Menomonee River makes it an integral part of Milwaukee's urban ecology. It serves as a green corridor, supporting local wildlife and contributing to the city's efforts in maintaining biodiversity within its urban landscape.
