Rushton Park

William J. Rushton Sr. Park, located in the Highland Park neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, is a charming green space nestled along the scenic Highland Avenue. The park occupies a low-lying basin, originally designed as a collection area for rainfall, making it unsuitable for building but ideal for aesthetic and recreational purposes.

Spanning approximately 4.37 acres, Rushton Park is the easternmost and largest of three small parks situated along Highland Avenue. The park's southern half is bordered by Highland Avenue itself, while the northern portion is bounded by 30th Place South and 31st Street South. Notable sites facing the park include the Sheraton Apartments, Avalon Condominiums, and Independent Presbyterian Church, contributing to the area's historic and architectural significance.

Originally named "Hall's Park," it was renamed around 1926 in honor of William J. Rushton Sr., a Birmingham alderman and Board of Education president. The renaming came after his son, J. Frank Rushton, and others raised money to improve the park following the elder Rushton's death in 1922. Two markers within the park pay tribute to William J. Rushton Sr., including a smaller one along the sidewalk at the park's southern edge and a larger one featuring a relief bust and short biography inside the park.

The park serves as a central gathering spot for the Highland Park community, offering a blend of recreational facilities and open green spaces. Its layout and features make it suitable for various activities, from casual strolls to organized sports, catering to residents of all ages.
