About Phelan Park in Birmingham
Phelan Park, also known as Triangle Park, is a small neighborhood park located in the Five Points South area of Birmingham, Alabama. Established in 1907, the park was named after the Phelans, a prominent Birmingham family. The park is situated between 13th and 14th Avenues South at 15th Street South, forming a triangular shape that gives it its alternative name.
As part of Birmingham's historical landscape, Phelan Park is included in the Phelan Park Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 26, 1989. The historic district is roughly bounded by 13th Avenue South, 14th Street South, 16th Avenue South, and 13th Place South.
In the early 20th century, Phelan Park played a role in the development of the surrounding neighborhood. The area saw significant growth after the South 15th Street streetcar line opened in 1907, with the Phelan sisters recognizing the opportunity and resurveying their land to create more saleable lots.
The park underwent improvements as part of a Works Progress Administration project during the New Deal era, further enhancing its value to the community. Today, Phelan Park continues to serve as a green space for local residents and visitors, offering a glimpse into Birmingham's urban development history.
