About McLendon Park in Birmingham
McLendon Park is a 68.22-acre public park located at 400 Graymont Avenue West in Birmingham, Alabama. The park's most prominent feature is Legion Field, a large football stadium that has hosted numerous collegiate and professional sporting events over the years.
Originally dedicated in the 1920s, McLendon Park has served as an important recreational space for the surrounding neighborhoods of Graymont, Smithfield, College Hills, Arlington-West End, and Bush Hills. The park was named after David McLendon, a city commissioner who helped negotiate the land purchase for the park in the 1920s.
In addition to Legion Field, McLendon Park contains other athletic facilities and open green spaces. The park provides opportunities for organized sports as well as casual recreation for local residents. Its central location makes it an accessible outdoor destination within the city of Birmingham.
Over the years, there have been various proposals to further develop or revitalize McLendon Park and the Legion Field area. As a large public space near downtown Birmingham, the park continues to play a role in discussions about future planning and community development for the western areas of the city.
