About South Anchorage Sports Park in Anchorage
South Anchorage Sports Park is a 63.1-acre recreational facility located in Anchorage, Alaska. The park was created in June 1997 on land that was previously homesteaded by the Klatt family and used as a tree and sod farm. The property was acquired by the Municipality of Anchorage through a land trade and dedicated as park land.
The park offers a diverse range of sports and recreational facilities for the community. It features multiple baseball fields, including one American Legion baseball field and two little league fields. Soccer enthusiasts can enjoy the park's five soccer fields. For off-road enthusiasts, there is an RC track where remote-controlled vehicles can be operated.
Dog owners will appreciate the dedicated dog park area, allowing pets to run and play off-leash in a controlled environment. The park also includes paintball fields for those interested in this recreational activity. Additionally, there are open play areas and a trail system for walking, running, or casual strolls.
In 2014, the Anchorage Parks and Recreation department worked with community members and user groups to update the master plan for South Anchorage Sports Park. This updated plan outlines improvements and provides a framework for future development over the next 20 years. The plan includes provisions for playgrounds, picnic shelters, and additional amenities to enhance the park's usability and appeal.
The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., providing ample opportunity for residents to enjoy its facilities throughout the day. Visitors should be aware that the park's location in Alaska means that wildlife, including moose, may occasionally be present in the area.
