Kincaid Park

Kincaid Park is a sprawling 1,516-acre municipal park located in Anchorage, Alaska. Situated at the southwest tip of the Anchorage Bowl, the park offers a diverse landscape of rolling, forested hills and scenic vistas. The park's terrain is composed of an ancient and rugged moraine, providing visitors with panoramic views of Denali, Mount Susitna, Fire Island, and Cook Inlet on clear days.

Originally the site of a Cold War-era Nike-Hercules missile base, Kincaid Park was established in 1978 and has since evolved into a year-round recreational haven. The park is characterized by its extensive trail system, which includes approximately 60 kilometers of interconnected paths suitable for various activities. In winter, nearly 40 miles of these trails are groomed for cross-country skiing, with about 12 miles illuminated for night use.

The park's natural environment consists primarily of mature forests with birch, cottonwood, and spruce trees. This habitat supports a variety of wildlife, including moose, black bears, lynx, and bald eagles. Visitors are often able to observe these animals, particularly moose, which are frequently seen throughout the park.

Kincaid Park is renowned for its world-class Nordic skiing facilities and has hosted numerous major ski competitions, including U.S. National Championships and Olympic trials. However, the park's recreational offerings extend far beyond skiing. In the summer months, the trails transform into popular routes for hiking, biking, and running. The park also features several specialized areas for activities such as archery, biathlon, motocross, and disc golf.

One of the park's unique features is a large sand dune located in its southwest corner, providing an unexpected desert-like experience in the Alaskan landscape. Additionally, the park connects to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, offering extended recreational opportunities along the Cook Inlet shoreline.
