About Bidwell Park in Hayward

Bidwell Park is a public park located in Hayward, California. The park is currently undergoing renovation as part of a master plan process that began in 2019. The project aims to transform the existing park and the former Bidwell Elementary School site into a new community center and expanded recreational space for South Hayward residents.

The park spans approximately 10.5 acres and is situated near the intersection of Fairway Street and Rousseau Street. The renovation plans, approved by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors in November 2020, include repurposing two buildings along Fairway Street into a community center.

The master plan for Bidwell Park envisions an attractive neighborhood amenity designed to welcome users of all ages. The park's layout incorporates various features to cater to diverse community needs and interests. Environmental review for the project was completed in accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) prior to the plan's approval.

Construction documents for the renovation began development in 2022, with initial work including the demolition of a classroom building in the park's interior, completed in November 2022. The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District has been actively seeking community input on the park's future through workshops and online surveys to ensure the renovated space meets local needs and preferences.
