Peace Park

Peace Park is a small public park located in Long Beach, California. Opened on January 24, 2004, this 0.4-acre green space provides a much-needed recreational area in central Long Beach. The park was created as part of the city's initiative to increase open spaces and improve the quality of life for residents.

The park's name, "Peace Park," was chosen through an essay contest held among third and fourth-grade students at nearby Roosevelt Elementary School. Fourth-grader Le'Niesha Johnson's entry was selected by a judging panel, reflecting the community's involvement in the park's creation.

Situated at the corner of 14th Street and Atlantic Avenue, Peace Park offers a tranquil setting in an urban environment. The park adjoins the Sea Mist Senior Housing project, providing easy access for elderly residents to enjoy outdoor activities. The Conservation Corps of Long Beach assisted with the park's construction, further emphasizing community participation in its development.

Funding for the park came from various sources, including the City's Mini Park fund, the Mayor's Mini-park Program, and Park Impact Fees. The total construction cost was approximately $90,000, demonstrating the city's commitment to creating accessible green spaces even with limited resources.

Peace Park serves as a beacon for the neighborhood, offering a place for relaxation, play, and community gathering. Its creation aligns with Long Beach's Open Space Plan goal of adding new park acreage and increasing the ratio of park space per thousand residents.
