About Douglas MacArthur Park in Long Beach
MacArthur Park, located in Long Beach, California, is a 3.9-acre urban green space that serves as a vital recreational area for the surrounding community. The park, situated in the heart of Cambodia Town, has been an integral part of the neighborhood since its establishment.
The park is currently undergoing a significant rehabilitation project, which began in 2024 and is expected to be completed by summer 2025. This $10.5 million renovation aims to enhance the park's facilities and create a more inviting space for residents.
The redesign of MacArthur Park draws inspiration from Southeast Asian landscapes, particularly the riverine environment of Cambodia. This cultural homage reflects the park's location in Cambodia Town and honors the area's large Cambodian American population. The new design will incorporate elements such as a river-lined-with-lilypads theme and play sculptures of animals native to Southeast Asia, including an Irrawaddy dolphin and a baby Asian elephant.
MacArthur Park is home to the Homeland Cultural Center, which hosts various artistic and cultural programs, making it a hub for community events and creative expression. The park also features the Manazar Gamboa Community Theater, which will remain operational during the renovation.
Prior to the renovation, the park included basketball and tennis courts, a playground, picnic areas, and a restroom building. The playground and restroom were previously redeveloped in 1988, with additional playground improvements completed in 1994.
