Drake Park

Drake Park, located in Long Beach, California, is a historic urban park with a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. Situated west of Maine Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets, the park covers an area of 6.6 acres.

The park's origins can be traced back to Col. Charles R. Drake, a prominent figure in Long Beach's early development. Drake, who once operated the old Virginia Hotel and served as president of the Long Beach Amusement Company, donated the original 1.86 acres of land. On January 11, 1904, the park was deeded to the City and initially called Knoll Park.

Over the years, Drake Park has undergone several expansions and improvements. In 1972, the park was significantly expanded with federal funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This expansion included the acquisition and clearance of one and one-half blocks of the neighboring area, as well as the addition of various sports facilities.

Today, Drake Park serves as a vital community space, offering a range of recreational facilities and amenities for residents and visitors alike. The park is open daily from dawn until 10 PM, providing ample opportunity for community members to enjoy its facilities.

Drake Park is part of the Drake Park/Willmore City Historic Landmark District, which was one of the first historic districts declared by the city of Long Beach. This designation highlights the park's historical significance and its role in preserving the area's cultural heritage.
