About Wilma Chan Park in Oakland

Wilma Chan Park, formerly known as Madison Square Park, is a 1.5-acre public green space located in the heart of Oakland's Chinatown district. The park was renamed in 2022 to honor Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan following her death in 2021.

This urban oasis serves as a central gathering place for the local community. The park features a variety of amenities that cater to different age groups and interests. Its layout includes open grassy areas, paved walkways, and designated spaces for recreational activities.

Wilma Chan Park is particularly popular among older residents of Chinatown, who frequently use the space for morning exercises and social gatherings. On most mornings, visitors can observe a diverse range of activities taking place, including Qi Gong, Tai Chi, sword and fan dances, Taiwanese dance, line dancing, stretching, and badminton.

The park's history is intertwined with the development of Oakland's Chinatown. In the 1960s, the park was relocated from its original site to make way for the construction of BART headquarters. This relocation was part of broader urban renewal projects that impacted the Chinatown area at the time.

Wilma Chan Park provides a serene environment within the urban setting of Oakland, offering residents and visitors alike a space for relaxation, exercise, and community engagement.
