About Estuary Park in Oakland
Estuary Park is a 7-acre public space located along the Oakland shoreline at the mouth of the channel connecting to Lake Merritt in California. The park offers a unique waterfront experience with views of the Oakland Estuary and serves as a significant recreational area for the local community.
At the heart of Estuary Park is the Jack London Aquatic Center, a prominent feature that houses various youth and adult rowing programs. The center also functions as a community facility, available for special events and providing boat and equipment storage for several rowing clubs and the City's boating programs.
The park's location on the Oakland Estuary provides a relatively calm and protected waterway compared to the open Bay, making it an ideal spot for different types of boating activities. However, boaters need to be familiar with navigational safety techniques and how to navigate near other vessels.
Estuary Park is part of a larger regional effort by the City of Oakland to create a distinctive waterfront that improves and sustains the quality of city life both socially and ecologically. The park is aligned with other regional improvements included in the Lake Merritt Master Plan and the Central Estuary Plan.
In recent years, there have been plans for renovation and expansion of Estuary Park. The project aims to develop detailed designs for park renovation and expansion, particularly for the undeveloped areas west and south of the Jack London Aquatic Center. This expansion is expected to increase the total park area and introduce new amenities to attract a wider range of users from the neighborhood, city, and broader region.
